Marian Short

Marian Short is a printmaker of ten years, residing in Ann Arbor, MI. After taking an introductory course at the Ann Arbor Art Center in 1999, Marian has experimented with different approaches to woodblock designs, delving into multiple blocks for more colorful images and sometimes incorporating watercolor, marker and spray paint. The changes occurring at each of the multiple stages of printmaking – sketching, carving the negative space from the wood, deciding on shades of color, pulling prints from each block – provides a continual source of interest.

Marian’s love of picture books comes through in the whimsical designs and frequent use of text to expand and complement imagery. Subject matter varies, but often includes potentially serious subjects handled with a light touch, including: transitions & the will to move on, the boundaries between “acceptable”/”unacceptable” nature, and the ever-popular pursuit of love objects…

Marian does not have professional art schooling, but was privileged to have grown up in a family that always fostered creativity – collectively, pursuits included: writing, sewing, photography, drawing, jewelry, and cooking/baking. Her prints have been displayed locally and have been included in past shows at the Ann Arbor Art Center. Her online shop (www.cakeasaurus.etsy.com) continues to grow.
